Could This Be Used for A Dog Park?

Posted by gschroeder On September - 7 - 2009

I have had inquiries concerning LaSalle building a dog park.  Now if you don’t have a dog or want one, or ever had one you are probably saying we don’t need one.  If you are a dog lover or owner you are probably saying…its about time!

Peru had a dog park at the sight of the new Parkside school but moved it to the park just north of the armoury on Plank Road.  I understand it is well used and appreciated by the dog owning citizens of Peru.  I also know that LaSalle residents take their dogs there as well but find it a bit out of the way for them.

As I was passing Mary Hegeler Memorial  Park on fourth street it hit me that this would be a good location for a dog park in LaSalle.  If you have been by lately you can see a large open area that I think would be great for dogs and their owners.  It doesn’t appear to be well used currently and it would need little in the way of money to convert a portion of it for our four legged friends.  The park board meets this Tuesday at city hall and I have asked one member to bring this up for discussion.  Due to the holiday we will be meeting the same night in council chambers.  I will discuss the issue here as well.  If your interested come down to city hall on Monday..both meetings start at 7pm.

I would love to have your input, pro or con.

PS….The dogs will have to wait outside….

Please don’t ruin our charming little neighborhood park by turning it into a ‘dog park’.
If you want to follow what Peru did you should suggest a new dog park on the outskirts of town that isn’t currently used for anything, not turn an existing park for children and young families into something for animals.
And, this area around the park is notorious for people abandoning (dumping off)their animals…dogs and cats. It would make the matter worse for us.
One more thing, if you care to drive by more often you will see that there are plently of young families who use Mary Hegle Carus Park.

      Jim,
Thanks for your thoughts on the park. I would hope that adding a dog park to a portion of this park would not ruin it for others to use, ie families and adults. As to dumping animals maybe the dog park would decrease that from happening there since more people would be using it. I hope you are right about families using the park, and I admit I do not drive by that often. I was on the park board for several years and this park was always one which was reportedly not used as often as our other parks. We will see what the park board says when they discuss it next month. Thanks again for your thoughts..

I think this is a wonderful long over due project for the City of LaSalle.

    Mr. Schroeder,

While I do agree that it would be nice for LaSalle to have a dog park,(I am a dog lover and have two of my own), I would hate to see our little park down here be turned into one. Its the only relatively safe place for our neighborhood children to play. sidewalks are non -existant down here and with the road open to traffic its dangerous for them to play in it. My neighbors and I are constantly having picnics in the grass (because they took our picnic tables away) and I can’t see us really eating next to a place where dogs pee all over. I know that it will be fenced in, and theres clean up laws for dogs, but unfortunately you can’t tell a german shepard not to pee on the way to the gate!
I DO think this park needs some work! We parents are always scanning for dangerous things that could harm our kids! The slide was only finished half way up with safety rails, and underneath is covered in poison ivy. With a little work it could be a great little town secret instead of just the neighborhoods!
I was wondering about that new park that you had the video on for a good place? It would be out of the way and a nice open area for the pups to run in fresh air!
Thanks for opening the discussion and giving us the chance to have our say!

      April,
Thanks for your thoughts. I understand your concerns about allowing dogs a section of the park. The park out east will be big enough to have a dog park section which will not negatively impact the rest of the area. The bad news is that our new rotary park will not be up and running for some time although we are getting closer. If not Mary Hegeler park would you have an alternative site in mind..even if it is only temporary until Rotary Park is opened? I need the readers help with suggestions. I appreciate you taking the time to comment
