Don”t Worry…Nobody’s Watching…

The City is in the midst of union negotiations with the city workers, police and for the first time the full time firemen.  I understand the city workers contract is about settled and the police and fire are not.  The job of negotiating these contracts has been in the hands of city council members and the Mayor.  As most of you know, many city and state governments are in trouble today based on what was agreed to in the past.  I think the workers should try to get the best deal they can and at the same time governments need ...

Don’t Worry…We’ll Pay For It Later!

In doing further research I have found out that Council indeed voted on a road project ordinance without having a total list of streets to be worked on.  I find that truly remarkable!  That's like authorizing spending without knowing where the money is going.  Our Council has reached a new low by acting in this way.  Its action in this case indicates what It respect they have for us taxpayers.  They are saying to the Mayor" here's the money...spend it anywhere you want!" That shows a  complete lack of understanding what their duties are as elected officials.  They need to ...

Road to Ruins???

You will have to excuse me because I was vacationing last week and have been a bit behind in the local news happenings.  I did see tonight's paper and I had to laugh at (A) the council meeting notes for LaSalle and (B) the way in which they were reported.  The special assessment math is way off when it comes to the Malcolm avenue repairs. It says the project would be $200,000 and divided among 17 residents over ten years.  It shows 12.50 per month in cost to residents over the ten years. 17 residents times $12.50 a month equals ...

I Thought Only Criminals Were Considered At Large!

I was really curious when I saw that the City of Peru might entertain half a council who would be considered at large or in common parlance "everybody's Aldermen". I have to ask why?  What's in it for the average citizen?  When I was alderman I fielded questions from people all over town regardless of ward.  It depended on what the issue was....If a citizen had a question specific to their ward only generally they call city hall.  I'm talking about filling a pothole or adding gravel to the holes in the alley.  In reality if that was the problem ...

“Well As Long As Your Sorry…..”

In March 7th's addition of the News Tribune, above the fold, the headline story was "Teen gets probation for Westclox fire".  I hope everyone took the time to read that story and see what one Judge decided was proper punishment for this crime. Judge Daniel J. Bute decided that there was no need to go to IDJJ and 66 days of being held in custody was enough.  He was released to his mother.  Also he must do 240 hours of community service and is on probation for five years.  According to the paper even the teen was surprised he was ...

All In The Family….

Former LaSalle Fire Chief Bill Bacidore  died last Saturday.  His passing made me stop and think about when I first met him.  Surprisingly it was when I was about fourth or fifth grade.  At that time I was busy playing baseball in the parks during the summer days and swimming at the LaSalle pool in the afternoon.  That was followed by doing my paper route on my bike.  A friend of mine , Randy Strauch and I hung around together most of the summers back then and his father Bob and Bill worked at Comparon Motors.  They were both in ...

Who Owns P.V.A.S?

Posted by gschroeder On May - 16 - 2009
It appears by the conversation on the Change for  Peru blog that the subject of the PVAS  is a hot topic.  I have had the experience of negotiating over the years with the board for PVAS on trying to place an ambulance in the city of LaSalle at our fire station.  As most of you know, recently we were successful in having a staffed ambulance placed in our fire facility for a portion of each day. I would like to take this opportunity to explain what I know about PVAS and its evolution over the years.  Former Mayor Baker once explained to me that the ambulance facility started with equipment...

IVAC Has The Area’s Mayors For Breakfast

Posted by gschroeder On May - 14 - 2009
I awoke early wednesday morning  to join the area’s mayors for a breakfast buffet at Mario’s Maples Supper Club hosted by IVAC.  The gathering was part of their ongoing breakfast seminars.  This was the last for the season and is usually well attended.  The topic was the “State of the Illinois Valley” and is  a forum for the local Mayors to give us their plans for their respective cities.  This year LaSalle, Peru, Spring Valley and Utica were represented.  All by their mayor’s with the exception of Spring Valley.  Newly elected Mayor Cliff Banks was off on...

Mayor Grove Addresses the LaSalle Business Association

Posted by gschroeder On May - 14 - 2009
Monday evening Mayor Grove addressed the LBA (LaSalle Business Assoc) and shared with them his vision for the future of LaSalle under his leadership.  Many of the alderman , including myself, were in attendance.  The mayor appeared a bit nervous with his first public appearance since his election.  He spoke approximately thirty minutes which was followed by a question and answer period of about thirty minutes as well.  After letting us know his administrative appointments were to be the same personnel as the previous mayor’s with the exception of Pam Broviak who was not reappointed,...

Chunks of LP’s Spire Fall to Ground

Posted by admin On May - 12 - 2009
Today LP’s students and parents received notice from Dr. Craig Carter, L-P Superintendent, that a small piece of the spire architecture above the special ed north doors had fallen to the ground. “No one was hurt,” said Dr. Carter. “We immediately closed the entrance, notified our architect, and a local contractor will be making repairs early this morning. As a further safety precaution, the other spired entrances will be closed until they can be checked as well. ” Those arriving today at the school were advised to use the west gym entrance doors.

And So It Begins…

Posted by gschroeder On May - 11 - 2009
Well by now you all are aware we have elected three new mayors in our communities. Jeff Grove in LaSalle, Scott Harl in Peru, and Cliff Banks in Spring Valley. There are those who wonder what caused this and are amazed that three cities with incumbent mayors running for re-election all are under new leadership.  To start with those gentlemen who won can send a note of thanks to our “hope and Change”  President Barack Obama.  Last Fall he created a firestorm which called for change from the status quo and away from the media hated George Bush even though old George wasn’t running. Credit...

Mayor Jeff, What were you thinking?

Posted by gschroeder On May - 9 - 2009
If anyone saw the News-tribune article from May 8th titled “Financing stymies Kaskaskia project” you must have come away with the same thought-Mayor Jeff what were you thinking?  In the article it talks about the inability to obtain financing (real shock in this economy!) to proceed with the renovations and improvements to the Hotel Kaskaskia. The bulk of the article deals with the obvious and points out that the private (read local) developers are hopeful they can still move forward soon with the project. What I find amazing  were the comments by our new Mayor Jeff Grove. In the...

Everyone is Talking Flu

Posted by admin On May - 2 - 2009
Although there still haven’t been any cases of Swine Flu in the Illinois Valley, it doesn’t hurt to be cautious and informed. LaSalle-Peru High School seems to be following this advice by sending out a notice to all parents, students, and staff informing them of steps the school is taking to prevent an outbreak. According to Dr. Carter, school superintendent, L-P provides alcohol-based hand cleanser and sanitizer wipes in all offices and classrooms. The school will also be “super-cleaned” this Saturday, May 2nd, although no indication was given to describe what super-cleaning...

Sunshine and Medals for Special Olympic Athletes

Posted by admin On May - 2 - 2009
After what seemed like weeks of constant rain, the sun decided to shine bright in Spring Valley for the 32nd Annual Starved Rock Special Olympics Spring Games. More than 270 athletes from 26 schools and agencies showed up early this morning ready to run, throw, and share in some fun and great competition. The combined bands from LP, Hall, and Mendota high schools kicked off the event while athletes and coaches paraded onto the field cheered on by families and friends. After the torch bearers carried the flame across the field to light the large torch, the games began. Participants competed in...
